The research and teaching activities at the Institute of Geography aim to better understand the causes and effects of global change and to develop solutions that enable sustainable development in the Anthropocene period.

Research at the Institute

The research at the institute is very diverse. In the areas of society, environment and resources, we deal with the change of our environment, especially climate and land use, as well as the transformation of our society(s). We investigate the management of natural and digital resources, the relationship between environment and health, as well as local, regional and supra-regional mobility and its factors. A strong focus on methodological development in close cooperation of methodological, didactic and technical sciences is our unique selling point. Geographical education and the visual communication of complex contexts round off our research profile.

Studium

The Institute of Geography is in charge of about 1700 students (June 2019). Our graduates praise the choices available to them during their studies and the opportunities for building their profile. Our current annual topic combines the interdisciplinary range of courses on offer.

bachelor

The institute offers the bachelor courses Geography and Geoinformatics (together with the Institute of Computer Science) and is represented in other courses with electives.

master

Our Master's programmes in Geography, Geoinformatics, Climate and Environmental Sciences and Global Change Ecology reflect the diversity of our research.

teaching post

In the teacher training courses all combinations with all school types (grammar school, secondary school, primary school, third subject) can be studied.

Die Fachgruppe Standortentwicklung feiert ihr zehnj?hriges Bestehen! Im Wintersemsester 2009/2010 wurde erstmals im Studiengang Geographie das Nebenfach Standortentwicklung angeboten, das sich seither gro?er Beliebtheit bei Studierenden erfreut. Inhaltlich werden anwendungsorientierte und praxisnahe Vorlesungen, Projektseminare und Exkursionen zu Themen wie Orts-, Stadt- und Regionalentwicklung, Wirtschaftsf?rderung, Tourismus, Konsumverhalten, Place Branding oder Arbeitsmarkt-Management angeboten.
